Typing tests on any webpage, explained.
How Typinground works, how your typing speed is measured, and how to get faster.
What is Typinground?
Typinground is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that turns any webpage into a typing test. Press Alt+Shift+T on an article, type right over the text, and get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and a speed chart.
How do I take a typing test on any webpage?
Install Typinground, open any page with text such as a Wikipedia article or a blog post, and press Alt+Shift+T. A caret appears at the first paragraph on screen. Type the text; when the test ends you see your WPM, accuracy and the keys and words you missed. Press Esc to exit.
Is Typinground free?
Yes. There are no ads and no subscription, and an account is optional.
Which browsers does it support?
Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave, from the Chrome Web Store. A Firefox version is coming to Firefox Add-ons.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM counts the characters of correctly typed words, including the spaces after them, divides by five (the standard length of a word) and divides by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct.
Why is my WPM lower than on typing test websites?
Most typing sites use short lowercase words with no punctuation. Real articles have capitals, commas, quotes and numbers, which are slower to type. Turn on Simple mode (lowercase, no punctuation) in Settings for scores you can compare with word-list sites.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Practice a little every day on text you actually read, and focus on accuracy before speed. Typinground's dashboard shows your weakest keys on a keyboard heatmap, the words you trip on, common slips and your slowest letter pairs, and builds short practice drills from them.
Can I type just one part of a page?
Yes. Press Alt+Shift+P, hover over the part you want, use the up and down arrows to widen or narrow the selection, then click. Typinground remembers your choice for that site.
Does it work on every website?
It works on almost any page with text, and pages without much text get a common-words test instead. Browsers don't allow extensions on internal pages such as chrome://, on extension stores, or in the built-in PDF viewer.
Does Typinground change the page?
No. Typing progress is drawn on top of the text, and pressing Esc leaves the page exactly as it was. The extension does nothing on a page until you press its shortcut.
Is my data sent anywhere?
Only if you sign in. Without an account, your results and settings stay in your browser. Signing in with Google or GitHub syncs your history, analysis and settings across devices. Nothing is public. See the privacy policy.
The shortcut doesn't work. What should I do?
Another extension may already use Alt+Shift+T. Change the shortcut in the Typinground dashboard's Settings, and refresh tabs that were open before you installed the extension.
