# Typinground > Typinground is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that turns any webpage into a typing test. Press Alt+Shift+T on an article, type over the page itself, and get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and a speed chart. Typinground is for people who practice touch typing and want to test their speed without opening a separate typing website. It uses the text of the page you're already reading (articles, blogs, documentation, newsletters) instead of a list of random words, so practice includes capitals, punctuation and numbers. ## Key facts - Price: free. No subscription, no ads. An account is optional. - Browsers: Chrome and Chromium browsers (Edge, Brave), and Firefox. - Start a test: press Alt+Shift+T on any webpage. Press it again, or Esc, to exit. - Pick which part of the page to type: Alt+Shift+P, hover, use the up/down arrows to widen or narrow, then click. The choice is remembered per site. - Test modes: time (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds) or words (10, 25, 50 or 100 words). - Results: WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, character counts and a per-second speed chart. Analysis, practice drills, history and settings live in the dashboard (the extension options page); the toolbar popup is a quick launcher. - Simple mode: lowercase with no punctuation, for scores comparable with word-list typing sites. - Text handling: curly quotes, dashes and accented letters become plain keyboard characters; footnote markers and untypeable words are skipped. - Pages without much text get a common-words test instead. - Privacy: without an account, results and settings stay in the browser. Signing in (Google or GitHub) saves test results, display name and avatar to the Typinground server so history and analysis sync across devices. Nothing is public. Privacy policy: https://typinground.pages.dev/privacy.html - Typing analysis: every test is replayed keystroke by keystroke to find your least accurate and slowest keys (shown as a keyboard heatmap), the words you mistype most, common slips (one letter typed as another), your slowest letter pairs, and accuracy on capitals, numbers and punctuation, plus a speed trend. - Shortcuts can be changed in the dashboard's Settings; signed in, they sync to the account along with other settings, saved sections and theme. - Practice drills: short word drills built from your own weak spots, with Enter (configurable) to restart and Esc to go back. - The page is never modified: typing progress is drawn with the CSS Custom Highlight API, and pressing Esc leaves the page exactly as it was. - Limits: browsers don't allow extensions on internal pages (such as chrome://), extension stores, or the built-in PDF viewer. ## Keyboard shortcuts - Alt+Shift+T: toggle typing mode on the current page - Alt+Shift+P: pick a section to type - Tab: new test from the first paragraph on screen - Enter: repeat the same text (on the results card) - Ctrl+Backspace: delete the current word - Space: skip to the next word - Esc: exit ## Links - [Home page](https://typinground.pages.dev/): overview, core features, shortcuts and store links - [Privacy policy](https://typinground.pages.dev/privacy.html)
